Role Overview:

As part of the U.S. Consumer Services (USCS) team, which oversees our suite of consumer products including premium cards, co-brands, lending, banking, dining, and digital services, you will play a vital role in managing Application Controls.

The Control Management – Application Controls team ensures data integrity, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence by designing, implementing, and enhancing risk mitigation controls across USCS processes.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, prioritization, and implementation of Application Controls across multiple USCS business lines (e.g., Prop Cards, Co-Brand, Lending, Banking, Dining, Digital Labs).

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on application controls that safeguard data reliability and support business process integrity.

  • Partner with stakeholders to improve input, processing, output, and application change controls, clearly defining roles and expectations.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure end-to-end coverage of Cardmember transactions from a controls perspective.

  • Conduct in-depth risk analysis and process reviews to identify control gaps and mitigate operational risks.

  • Advise business unit process owners and application owners on design and implementation of appropriate controls.

  • Analyze historical control-related issues and collaborate with Risk Identification & Assessment teams to develop preventive strategies.

  • Ensure compliance with enterprise policies such as AEMP70 (Enterprise Data Governance) and TECH Standard 06.48, and assist in enhancing BU procedures accordingly.

  • Support integration of decentralized risks into overarching ORM policies.

  • Maintain a knowledge base of risk trends, industry updates, and compliance regulations.

  • Design and deliver training programs on application controls to promote awareness and accountability.

  • Share key insights, trends, and practices to strengthen operational risk management (ORM) across American Express.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1–2 years of experience in operational risk management, internal audit, or related risk functions.

  • Strong understanding of operational risk management lifecycle activities.

  • Proficiency in project management, stakeholder communication, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Familiarity with process governance, risk policies, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and identify risks.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or related field; advanced degrees (MBA, MSc) or certifications (e.g., ORM, GRC) are a plus.

  • Experience in any of the following areas:

    • Identifying and evaluating operational risks across systems and business processes.

    • Facilitating risk assessments and compliance testing.

    • Monitoring and enhancing control effectiveness.

    • Conducting independent QA reviews or process audits.

    • Preparing thematic risk reports to highlight emerging issues and risk trends.
